Birds of the Indonesian Archipelago: Greater Sundas and Wallacea 2nd edition – A Field Guide Review

10,000 Birds

Just last year, 5 new bird species and 5 new subspecies were discovered in a few short weeks of fieldwork on the islands of Taliabu, Peleng and Batudaka. But since Indonesia has more than 1,700 bird species (and that many islands, too), why is this guide dealing only with 1,400?

“The 125 Best Bird Watching Sites in Southeast Asia”

10,000 Birds

Having more than 2500 bird species, including over 850 endemics (480 in Indonesia alone), Southeast Asia stretches roughly from the easternmost Himalayan slopes in Myanmar and the palm-fringed beached of Thailand all the way to the ridiculously colourful Birds of Paradise of New Guinea, which Phoebe Snetsinger described: “I’ve never done acid, but I imagine that when you do, you see things like the birds-of-paradise.”

The Sunda Teals of Jakarta

10,000 Birds

There is one thing however that makes the Sunda Teal a rather highly desired species, and the name is a bit of a give-away: the species’ magic is in its range. The Sunda Teal is restricted to the region of the Sunda islands, ranging from the southern halves of Sumatra and Borneo through Java and Sulawesi all the way to Timor. The Sunda Teal is a brown duck.

Pygmy Wren-babblers on Java

10,000 Birds

South of this range are several isolated populations, in South Vietnam, the Malay peninsular, Sumatra, Java, Flores, and Timor, an all of them have been assigned subspecies status. On my third visit however, I was far more fortunate as the species was surpisingly active, with the birds’ movements frequently giving them away next to the trails. The pygmy wren-babbler is a tiny babbler that looks like a wren, making it a bird well named.
