Now animal shelters have the right to refuse to release animals to the University of Utah for animal research. Davis County Animal Shelter, a key supplier to the University of Utah, has already ceased this practice. I wish the whole practice had been outlawed, but at least now shelters can respond to public pressure.

Investigative journalism by the Salt Lake Tribune, following-up on allegations levelled by PETA against the University of Utah's Comparative Medicine Center and the Cardiovascular Research & Training Institute laboratories revealed the two laboratories had used 190 dogs and cats in 2009, all obtained from shelters.

I think there are many disreputable breeders, I think they are increasing a bloated supply of pets, and I think there are many purebreds already available from shelters. She has had two for the past ten years, one she bought and had shipped from a breeder in Utah, the other from a breeder in Virginia.

Shy dogs are often among the first to be euthanized in shelters because they are difficult to adopt, but not at DogTown, a no-kill facility.
