In simplest terms it is where the landfast ice meets the open ocean, and it is a magnet for wildlife, especially in the 24 hour light of the Arctic spring. Wildlife concentrates at the Floe Edge, and although we just missed Narwhal as pack ice moved in just after we arrived, the place was littered with Polar Bear. Ringed Seal.

Washington wildlife officials say eight sea lions have been found dead in the Puget Sound region in recent weeks — all apparently shot. KING-TV reports that both the state Department of Fish and Wildlife and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration are investigating the deaths.

As I have explained before these islands are the best place for a lot of the birding here because they are more easily protected from introduced mammals which wreck such havoc on the wildlife here. Since 1984 it has been planted with native bush and pests were controlled, and is now used as a wildlife reserve. I’ll work on that.

May 29, 2010 BP finally announces that Operation “Top Kill”, the effort to force drilling mud into the wellhead and seal it, has failed. June 2, 2010 BP apparently bans workers from showing dead or dying wildlife and from talking to the press. Government officials estimate that thousands of them are badly sealed.

Many of these islands are part of the Hawaiian Islands National Wildlife Refuge and one of the most important areas is Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) wants to eradicate all of the mice on Midway. Invasive species , particularly rodents, have long been a problem on the Hawaiian archipelago.

The following morning we were up early to make a crossing and were delighted to see a Grey Seal lounging around beside the causeway and another actually on the causeway, which soon moved for pedestrians! There were hundreds of Grey Seals between the mainland and the island and every “boulder” on the sand was in fact a seal!
