Newts are salamanders, or, more precisely, newts are aquatic salamanders with a land-living juvenile phase. That is, all newts are salamanders but not all salamanders are newts. but those two seem to be the two species that most people are likely to encounter or be turned into by witches.

For example, whoever named the blue spotted salamander did a yeoman's job, as this animal is (1) a salamander, and (2) blue with black spots. The name "Mamba Snake" doesn't tell us much about how it looks, but it's unique, memorable and, importantly, a snake.

Europe… with such low herp diversity the locals split any sub-population of a species that occurs on either the Iberian Peninsula or Italy as a new species just to make them feel better out themselves, naturally is the continent that rose to the top of my trip list. The original salamander – the Fire Salamander.

Just about every species of bird that had ever been found in the Triangle of North Carolina had been seen at some time or another at Mason Farm. The bugs and snakes and salamanders were pretty great too. Over my many years and many visits, I’d racked up well over 130 species there, 28 of which were warblers.
