Two political parties in Quebec are speaking out about the ritual slaughter of animals, but a Jewish advocacy group is confident that kashrut is not being targeted. A Parti Québécois legislator said Wednesday that slaughter for halal meat is an affront to animal rights and runs counter to the values cherished by Quebecers.

I don't support the slaughter of any animal, but if an animal will die anyway, don't we want the best possible conditions? I came across this strange article about German research on which slaughter method creates more pain for the animal: the Western method of stunning or the Islamic method of a cut to the neck. According to the researchers, the Islamic method wins. You can read all about the results in the article. What an utterly grotesque project.

ANIMAL rights groups have begun a campaign against the dairy industry's treatment of bobby calves. Australian Dairy Farmers says calves can be left unfed for 30 hours before slaughter but the RSPCA says the practice is "cruel". Here's the full article from the Weekly Times Now.

What do you do when you – a citizen whose rights are protected by the U.S. This is what we need for birds, whose rights as government-protected species are violated every day by free-roaming cats. A judge has found five animal-rights activists not guilty of getting too close to seal hunters during the 2006 hunt off Canada's east coast. The five were charged with coming within 10 metres of seal hunters on March 26, 2006 while filming the annual slaughter in the Gulf of St. That's good news. Lawrence, not far from Cape Breton.

The “Crow Down” is a “hunting contest” where both adults and children slaughter as many crows as they possibly can in two days. On the website he reminisces fondly about his “best hunt,” where he killed 3,125 crows in 9 days, bringing to mind the days when people slaughtered seemingly endless flocks of passenger pigeons and herds of buffalo.

The problem with that statement is it's not as if farmers are searching "the wild" for cows, pigs, chicken and fish, plucking them from their homes, and plopping them on a farm to live out their (shortened) lives prior to slaughter. They are created to be slaughtered. The choice isn't the wild or the farm. Yes, that's true.

I criticize PETA a lot, but in this case I think they are right on the money. I hate the seal slaughter. PETA has launched a spoof site for the Vancouver Olympic Games over seal hunting. I think it's barbaric and should be ended. You can go on and on about tradition, but just because something is old doesn't make it good.

Of course, as a result, "ethical meat" becomes an option unless one realizes that killing when you don't need to is killing when you don't need to, no matter if it occurs in a slaughterhouse or in a mobile slaughter operation or in a backyard. We are overfishing, over-trawling, and mutilating and slaughtering bycatch by the millions of tons (17-39 million tons/year, not including marine mammals, sea bids and some invertebrates). You don't need a widget to do the right thing. Oh, and this is a war we've declared and we're winning.

Yes, I do think it's better to have lived a comfortable life and then be slaughtered than to have been tortured the entire time and then be slaughtered. It's just not right. There is no question about the motive here: seduce the sheep into believing you care so that they are easier to deal with and easier to lead to slaughter.

Old-speciesists have a rights view of at least some humans but a utilitarian view of nonhumans (18). In some sense, of course, many (perhaps most) humans don't know right from wrong. To old-speciesists, nonhumans must justify their existence by proving useful to humans; in contrast, some or all humans have inherent value.
