Created by Congress in 1965, the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) was a bipartisan commitment to safeguard natural areas, water resources and our cultural heritage, and to provide recreation opportunities to all Americans. It was a simple idea: use revenues from the depletion of one natural resource – offshore oil and gas – to support the conservation of another precious resource – our land and water.

If they don’t have the time or resources, volunteer to help them! This Thursday, you can be a light for pets waiting in shelters. The message of Remember Me Thursday is to remember the millions of orphan pets who lost their lives over the last year. By uniting animal lovers across the world on one very special day, we can help raise awareness about animal adoption, and hopefully save the lives of more pets. If you are active on social media, please help spread the message.

I know he's a conservationist, therefore I know he will advocate for "managing" the "resources" that are sentient nonhumans. And of course that premise is only possible because the animals (and everything else on the planet) are our "resources." That depends largely on us, our priorities, and our allocation of resources. We can stop using animals and "allocate resources" to educate Homo sapiens worldwide to change their relationship to the animals around them.

Of course, will be there sufficient resources expended to catch the killers? This is in our own backyard. Total cowards. I hope they're caught because they could face a 50 thousand dollar fine. The deaths are a violation of the Marine Mammals Act and, because it’s a protected species, the shooting death of a Steller sea lion also violates the federal Endangered Species Act.

So many, so little time, so little support and so few resources. As many of you know, 2009 was chock full of creature-related drama for me. From the feral cats of Project Treadstone to Charles' back surgery to problems with Violet's Vetsulin (insulin for dogs), we had more than our share of issues. If I told you what I spent last year doing work-wise, you probably wouldn't believe me and you'd definitely suggest I write a book about it.
