So, you can imagine my excitement when my first Greater Roadrunner nearly walked right up to me as I sat in a blind observing Costa’s Hummingbirds sitting on a nest. They are quite capable of killing and eating the venomous rattlesnakes of this desert region.

Maybe you are hoping for an encounter with Crotalus horridus , otherwise known as the Timber Rattlesnake ? The twig going across the bird’s body was annoying so I moved to my right and, of course, as soon as I was about to take another shot the wood-warbler made a break for it and started foraging in some very thick foliage.

You can see two adult males, one in the middle and one on the right side of the screen and an adult female running up to the foraging group from the cover at the edge of the yard. The family stays very close to cover for several weeks, getting bolder as the young develop. The family group pictured below has been visiting my yard recently.
