Some people are seeking purebred animals or puppies and think these are not available in shelters. In fact, nearly a quarter of all animals in shelters are purebred. Often someone buys an expensive purebred animal and then attempts to breed that animal to recoup their money.

A Rottweiler named Sheba who broke free from her chain and rescued nine of her puppies after her owner buried them alive in a two-foot deep grave because they weren’t purebred. Bilbo, a Newfoundland, who was Britain’s only canine lifeguard in 2005 and named “Pet Hero of the Year” at a ceremony for the U.K.

Save the Planet: Adopting a shelter pet not only saves a life, but it reduces demand for purebred animals, which are more likely to have medical problems due to genetic abnormalities. If you’re not willing to go through the trials of house-training a young puppy or kitten, opting for an older shelter animal is an easy option.

You prevent that dog from producing puppies, and those puppies from producing puppies, and on and on for centuries maybe. It doesn’t matter if we were born in an Indian slum or to an American purebred. When you rescue a street dog, you stop that cycle. That’s some serious rescuing! All the cool kids are doing it.
