Before my trip to Washington the only species of puffin I had ever seen in the wild was the puffin of the Atlantic Ocean, the appropriately named Atlantic Puffin. Having flown to Washington State on a family vacation the first obstacle was easily out of the way, which you knew already if you ever read this blog. I love puffins.

Fall Birding at Nisqually NWR

Although it is a two-hour drive from Portland, I recently visited Nisqually NWR, which is located near Olympia, Washington.

I recently drove from my home in Portland to Conboy Lake NWR in southern Washington for a birding day-trip. Adams, the refuge is one of the few breeding locations for Sandhill Cranes in Washington. The refuge now supports most of the nesting Sandhills in Washington, with around 25 breeding pairs.
