Turtle Doves have been declining in Europe since the 1970s, and in this century alone, the continent has lost 40% of its population of the species. Money and effort are being invested in that protection.

It protects nesting shorebirds year round. It also protects nesting turtles, which nest later in the year. The vehicle access is closed around the biggest high tides when the turtles are nesting to protect them and their nest sites. There are good reasons for this rule.
