The shark's fins had been cut and he was still alive when found, but sadly died. Ironically, this was just after a conference on saving sharks held in the Phillipines. Eleven of them signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) pledging to protect the whale sharks. From Inquirer.net.

The following is a guest post about the horrors of shark finning. Sharks are a regular feature on television channels like the Discovery Channel, with even entire weeks devoted to this majestic sea creature. Shark finning is the practice of removing fins from live sharks with sharp tools, and then tossing the shark back into the ocean.

Washington wildlife officials say eight sea lions have been found dead in the Puget Sound region in recent weeks — all apparently shot. KING-TV reports that both the state Department of Fish and Wildlife and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration are investigating the deaths.

Even people with no other interest in wildlife, who couldn’t tell a sparrow from an ostrich (or even a dolphin from a fish) love dolphins. Dolphins are basically just smart sharks that breath air. Like I said, at least the sharks are honest in their sharky ways. Which has always mystified me slightly.

This time I’ll be working with Wildlife ACT in Zululand, helping that NGO monitor wildlife in a range of reserves and parks in the east of South Africa. I bring this up not to boast (well, not much) but because I think that this approach to wildlife travel is somewhat neglected in birding circles.

Soon we were out of the protected harbour and into choppier waters, and here I have to say I suffered for about two hours from the dreaded affliction known as sea-sickness. They are commonest where they are intensively protected and managed, but these places are often remote and hard to visit. Seeing a wild kiwi is potentially the highlight of a star-strewn birding visit to New Zealand, but please respect the tenuous situation the five species are in and any measures in place for their protection.
