Russell National Wildlife Refuge , more than a million acres of prairie, badlands, coulees, and the massive Fort Peck Reservoir on the Missouri River. In the winters the snow lies heavy and researchers travel in and out by small plane. The tussocks are badgers, the stones are grouse until they fails to fly away.

I took a ride up to the Fall River Valley back in October and spotted both morphs in the large grasslands where we also usually see Rough-legged Hawks and Prairie Falcons. They are often seen on the ground since their prey consists mainly of rabbit, prairie dog and, you guessed it, ground squirrel. This is the light morph.

Our internet research showed that somebody in Pine County had all three ( Black, Brown-capped, and Gray-crowned ) Rosy Finches on the feeders in their garden. We also saw Prairie Dogs , Bison , Mule Deer , Abert’s Squirrel and Coyote. This is a simple grey and black bird but I have always wanted to see one. And now I did.
