Black Rails at St. John’s National Wildlife Refuge

10,000 Birds

I think most readers of 10,000 Birds will, at this point, remember my great disappointment in January of 2012 when I went on the Black Rail field trip at the Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival and neither heard nor saw a Black Rail. Like MacArthur did when leaving the Philippines to the Japanese during World War II, I vowed to return. John’s National Wildlife Refuge just under two years from when I left it, a defeated birder.

Bird of Prey: The Story of the Rarest Eagle on Earth – A Film Review

10,000 Birds

The Philippine Eagle has a kind face. I couldn’t help thinking this–me, the anthropomorphism hater– as I watched a pair of Philippine Eagles tend their nest, raise a chick, and tear monkeys apart in Bird of Prey: The Story of the Rarest Eagle on Earth , a well-crafted, beautifully filmed documentary with a mission. Bird of Prey (not to be confused with the upcoming comic book film Birds of Prey ) tells the story of the Philippine Eagle in layers of time and place.

Rare Tee Clothing

4 The Love Of Animals

I chose the Philippine Tarsier Tee, which is a very fun shirt indeed! I also loved that Rare Tee donates $1 per t shirt to wildlife conservation, with current donations going to Audubon Society to help provide volunteers for wildlife rescue and clean up for the Gulf Oil Spill. I recently got the chance to try out a t-shirt from a company called Rare Tee. Their mission is to raise awareness on threatened and endangered species through their fun and contemporary apparel.

Birds and People: A Book Review

10,000 Birds

David Tipling, award-winning and widely published wildlife photographer, travelled the world during this period, photographing people interacting with birds, and sometimes, just birds. and also Modern Iraq, Egypt, Albania, Mexico, Poland and the Philippines. I’m not sure why.
