ALWAYS assume there is some other bird species in there that you have not found yet. Lake Merritt, Oakland, CA. Here is a flock of endangered species. Could a Sharp-tailed Sandpiper be mixed in with that flock of Pectorals ? Other flocks don’t come off as being so homogeneous. Buldir Island, AK.

Turkeys, 3 or 4 species of woodpeckers, all kinds of song birds grace our view constantly. On Sunday I’ll have a big day and try to bird all of Alley Pond Park (Queens, NYC), from APEC to Oakland Lake, the Oaks section, the kettle ponds and end at the walking trails in the southwest section of the park. As I said, we are blessed.

One of the advantages of Morelia as a birding/tourist destination is that we receive direct flights from Houston on United, Dallas/Fort Worth on American, and Los Angeles, Oakland, San Jose (California), and Chicago/Midway on the Mexican carrier Volaris. One species of interest is more common on Punhuato than in los Filtros: the Spotted Wren.

Last year’s magnificent total of 2647 species is the target to beat, but other results could prove interesting. 1499 species were seen in the eastern hemisphere in 2016. Thus; As at April 30 th 2017, the collaborative year total stands at 1432 , with 895 species noted this month from 164 shared checklists. 9 beats contributed their sightings (this knocks last April’s efforts of 116 lists for 672 species into a cocked hat and claws back some ground on the 30th April 2016 running total of 1707).

Eighteen-hour trips are the rule and only about four or five hours are spent in the prime area to see the species most birders are hoping to see. With Seagull Steve willing to let me crash at his house in Oakland and a Shearwater Journeys trip going out from Half Moon Bay on Saturday, 13 August, the whole plan came together wonderfully!
