Arizona, or Central Mexico?

All sorts of exotic and beautiful species may be seen. This would sound attractive even to me, except for one fact: almost all of those exotic and beautiful species are common down here in central Mexico. Southeastern Arizona is unusual, precisely because its species mix is as much Mexican as it is American.

Flogging A New Patch

In my last place of residence (Oakland,CA), I thought I found a place that would make an excellent patch, but I just was not able to get excited about the mediocre birding there despite it’s proximity to my house. Hugh Ramsey Nature Park has the highest species list of any hotspot within the city limits on eBird.

There Are Migratory Birds Other Than Wood-Warblers. Who Knew?

This White-eyed Vireo is perhaps the most cooperative of its species ever to exist. This bird was spending its time at Oakland Lake but they are easily found across Queens through the nesting season. All of the photos in this post were taken in Queens in the last week. Most of them have larger versions accessible via clicking.

Say’s Phoebe in Prospect Park, Brooklyn, New York

A Say’s Phoebe was found this morning in Prospect Park, Brooklyn, while Desi and I were having a fun nature walk at Oakland Lake in Queens with our friend Kerry. After our nature walk we had lunch, and while eating lunch more reports of the phoebe, which is a species I had never seen before in New York State, were coming in over email.

Queens Big Day (Kind of)

I decided to spend my day Friday birding the heck out of my home borough to see how many species I could track down for the day. Nonetheless, I ended up with 124 species of birds in Queens in the just-over-twelve-hours I spent birding. Still, any day in New York City with 124 species is a day well worth experiencing!
