Arizona, or Central Mexico?

10,000 Birds

All sorts of exotic and beautiful species may be seen. This would sound attractive even to me, except for one fact: almost all of those exotic and beautiful species are common down here in central Mexico.

Birds Are Gumming Up the (Public) Works

10,000 Birds

As bird lovers, we’re happy that laws exist to protect birds, and that people are especially looking after protected species. Meanwhile, on the opposite coast, Double-crested Cormorants are interfering with plans to tear down the old Bay Bridge between Oakland and San Francisco. But sometimes, what’s best for the birds and what’s best for the humans collide. In the United States, a few of those conundrums are making news.

There Are Migratory Birds Other Than Wood-Warblers. Who Knew?

10,000 Birds

This White-eyed Vireo is perhaps the most cooperative of its species ever to exist. This bird was spending its time at Oakland Lake but they are easily found across Queens through the nesting season. As Nate pointed out on the ABA Blog yesterday , we North American birders, especially those in the east, are a tad bit obsessed with wood-warblers. I am certainly no exception.

Flogging A New Patch

10,000 Birds

In my last place of residence (Oakland,CA), I thought I found a place that would make an excellent patch, but I just was not able to get excited about the mediocre birding there despite it’s proximity to my house. Which brings us to the real topic of the day…I’m not calling Oakland home at the moment…in fact, I have taken up residence in Harlingen, TX. Hugh Ramsey Nature Park has the highest species list of any hotspot within the city limits on eBird.

Say’s Phoebe in Prospect Park, Brooklyn, New York

10,000 Birds

A Say’s Phoebe was found this morning in Prospect Park, Brooklyn, while Desi and I were having a fun nature walk at Oakland Lake in Queens with our friend Kerry. After our nature walk we had lunch, and while eating lunch more reports of the phoebe, which is a species I had never seen before in New York State, were coming in over email.

Birding California: A Regional Primer

10,000 Birds

One or two Tufted Ducks show up at Lake Merritt in Oakland every year, with this drake in particular often lending itself for soul-satisfying views. Lake Merritt, Oakland, CA. Humboldt and Del Norte Counties offer top-knotch birding, and a suite of species that can’t be found in the rest of the state. A new development for California birders is the potential split of Western Scrub-Jay …we may soon be the only state to have three species of scrub-jay!!!

Queens Big Day (Kind of)

10,000 Birds

I decided to spend my day Friday birding the heck out of my home borough to see how many species I could track down for the day. Nonetheless, I ended up with 124 species of birds in Queens in the just-over-twelve-hours I spent birding. A quick stop at the beach netted me some beach-nesting birds and then I did a quick tour of some woodland parks, Alley Pond Park and Oakland Lake. Still, any day in New York City with 124 species is a day well worth experiencing!

Where Are You Birding This Third Weekend of March 2011?

10,000 Birds

Turkeys, 3 or 4 species of woodpeckers, all kinds of song birds grace our view constantly. On Sunday I’ll have a big day and try to bird all of Alley Pond Park (Queens, NYC), from APEC to Oakland Lake, the Oaks section, the kettle ponds and end at the walking trails in the southwest section of the park.

Birding Morelia

10,000 Birds

One of the advantages of Morelia as a birding/tourist destination is that we receive direct flights from Houston on United, Dallas/Fort Worth on American, and Los Angeles, Oakland, San Jose (California), and Chicago/Midway on the Mexican carrier Volaris. Among the many species Punhuato (pronounced poon-WAH-toe ) shares with los Filtros is the beautiful Blue Mockingbird. One species of interest is more common on Punhuato than in los Filtros: the Spotted Wren.

Collaborative list – January 2020

10,000 Birds

This shows the top birders, by species or checklists submitted. A new year, a new list. Does anyone have any special plans for the new decade? If you are not already a lister, this could be the moment that you have been waiting for.

My First West Coast Pelagic Trip

10,000 Birds

Eighteen-hour trips are the rule and only about four or five hours are spent in the prime area to see the species most birders are hoping to see. With Seagull Steve willing to let me crash at his house in Oakland and a Shearwater Journeys trip going out from Half Moon Bay on Saturday, 13 August, the whole plan came together wonderfully! Here in New York we are at quite the disadvantage when it comes to pelagic trips.

The Collaborative List 2017 – January.

10,000 Birds

Last year they shared over 1200 checklists and managed to achieve a stunning total of 2647 species from 32 countries. Last year’s magnificent total of 2647 species is the target to beat, but other results could prove interesting. 1499 species were seen in the eastern hemisphere in 2016. During the month of January 2017, 187 checklists were submitted and 892 bird species were recorded. This compares with 171 checklists for 855 species in Jan 2016.

Collaborative List 2017 – February

10,000 Birds

146 shared checklists (an increase on last year’s 97, well done chaps) noted 664 species (ooooh, down on 826 from last February) and brought the yearly total to 1063 (1303 at this time in 2016, ouch!). The beats have been mostly sedentary during February with only Corey venturing beyond his normal range. Tom has made an altitudinal migration, but stayed within his accepted beat. Redgannet has been wandering aimlessly as is his brief.

Collaborative List – April 2017

10,000 Birds

Thus; As at April 30 th 2017, the collaborative year total stands at 1432 , with 895 species noted this month from 164 shared checklists. 9 beats contributed their sightings (this knocks last April’s efforts of 116 lists for 672 species into a cocked hat and claws back some ground on the 30th April 2016 running total of 1707). It worked! After last month’s chastisement for shying away from the share button, Mike has come good.

2017 40

Collaborative List – August 2017

10,000 Birds

They submitted 144 checklists, noting 628 species adding 72 to the year’s running total bringing it to 1890. Corey’s trip to Belize via Guatamala has pushed the Country/Kingdom/Principality/Territory/ Special Administrative Area/Emirate list to 41 and 10,000 Birds very own tribute to Ed Sheeran can also lay claim to the 3,000th species (a Yucatan Vireo ) to be entered onto the Life List which currently stands at 3011.

Collaborative list – February 2020

10,000 Birds

Alley Pond Park–Oakland Lake. The beats are on the move, exploring new places. That bodes well for the numbers this month. And of course, we have an extra day to play with this year.
