The Simple Economics of Pet Overpopulation

Critter News

It seems to me that the root of the problem in pet overpopulation can be expressed simply in economic terms. The supply of pets is way, way greater than the demand for them. What we need to do is reach an equilibrium where the supply for pets equals the demand. The primary tool for this is spaying and neutering to decrease the population. Many groups and individuals are working very hard on this by trying to decrease the supply.

Almost every single outdoor pet cat, feral cat, or stray kills other animals , no matter how well fed the cat is through other sources. Trap-neuter-release programs sound nice and let folks think that they are doing good but they actually often add to the problem , and never reach the goal of zero feral cats in an area. But, one might ask, isn’t it virtually impossible to take a pet cat that is used to wandering freely out-of-doors and make it an indoor cat?
