Pink-headed Duck: The Search is On!

10,000 Birds

About four years ago I first wrote about the Pink-headed Duck , a charming species related to the pochards (although how, exactly, is up for grabs, like so much duck taxonomy.) Presumably, only the swamps and reedy rivers of Myanmar hold the answer. Now Global Wildlife Conservation is out to get some fresh evidence and hopefully re-discover the species, which was officially last seen in the 1949. “The 125 Best Bird Watching Sites in Southeast Asia”

10,000 Birds

Having more than 2500 bird species, including over 850 endemics (480 in Indonesia alone), Southeast Asia stretches roughly from the easternmost Himalayan slopes in Myanmar and the palm-fringed beached of Thailand all the way to the ridiculously colourful Birds of Paradise of New Guinea, which Phoebe Snetsinger described: “I’ve never done acid, but I imagine that when you do, you see things like the birds-of-paradise.”

Birding Hongbenghe, Yunnan

10,000 Birds

Hongbenghe is a very small village in Yunnan, right next to the border with Myanmar. Even better, there is a wooden, unguarded, slowly decaying bridge over to Myanmar – so while I do not have the passport stamp to prove it, I can honestly say that I have been to that country as well.

Where Have You Gone, Rhodonessa caryophyllacea?

10,000 Birds

It is easy to tell when some species become extinct — a Martha or a Lonesome George dies and there are no more, not now, not ever (until science fiction kicks in.) But for species that didn’t meet their end in captivity, that were always rare, that lived in remote areas, had retiring habits, or bore confusing similarities to their relatives, or simply lacked publicity — well, we can say we haven’t seen them in x number of years.

It divides countries into categories, where the next category has 200 more species. In some cases the data are outdated, e.g. Costa Rica has 900 and not 800 species, but I made no corrections, remaining faithful to the original map data. Shown as a list, it looks like this: Less than 200 bird species: Antarctica; oceanic islands. now the pace quickens: USA; Angola, Cameroon, Nigeria, Uganda, Sudan, Ethiopia; Nepal, Myanmar, Malaysia, Vietnam.

Here are the clues: 1. Some references indicate that this country has nearly 900 different species of birds. 3. Corey has written about one of the species, which I will most likely see when I go. And another list shows 6 endemics and 11 endangered species. 6. On one list, it is the 27th country with the most number of different bird species. Instead, name one of the endemic species in this country. This week’s quiz is geographically GLOBAL in nature.

Pygmy Wren-babblers on Java

10,000 Birds

The range of the Pygmy Wren-babbler is rather peculiar as it isn’t pygmy at all, reaching from the foothills of the Himalayas through the southern half of China to the northern half of Myanmar and Vietnam. On my third visit however, I was far more fortunate as the species was surpisingly active, with the birds’ movements frequently giving them away next to the trails. The pygmy wren-babbler is a tiny babbler that looks like a wren, making it a bird well named.
