I can't imagine the trauma the older monkey is going through. Thieves have stolen two monkeys from an enclosure at a wildlife park, police said today. The female squirrel monkeys were snatched after raiders broke into the Cotswold Wildlife Park, near Burford, Oxfordshire, last night. Horrible and cruel.

For more than a year, we have worked to block NASA’s planned radiation experiments on live squirrel monkeys. NASA had planned to irradiate 30 live squirrel monkeys in a misguided attempt to learn the effects of deep-space radiation. Because of your hard work, these monkeys will not be irradiated or otherwise abused.

Along with more orangutans and diminutive Common Pygmy Squirrels, we also found a massive cobra one day! Can’t do a post on Kinabatangan without the amazing Bornean endemic Probosis Monkey. I was lucky to see one Oriental Darter in Bangkok. On the river, I saw a dozen every day. Peace is a river to yourself in the evening.

Sometimes in a forest you’d be forgiven for thinking there was nothing but birds, monkeys and squirrels (and mosquitos, obviously), and then at night you start seeing civets, wallabies, and tarantulas. It brings mammals, and frogs in profusion, and reptiles, and insects. So many insects. And spiders, and scorpions.

Squirrels, water monitors, lizards, wild boar, macaque monkeys and more had too often stopped us in our tracks when we heard leaves rustling or odd sounds initially! We spent most of the morning walking around the reserve slowly. Suddenly across the dull and threatening sky we observed two large birds.
