Engber returned recently to the "monkey room" where Clayton was kept when Engber used him for research years ago and to his surprise, Clayton was still there. But not shocked enough.

Within Nariva Swamp is Bush Bush Wildlife Sanctuary, a sandy, low-lying peninsula populated by palms, strangler figs, and other hardy forest trees. We managed to see both species of monkey, though – so we were ultimately well satiated. Occasional fly-bys of pairs and trios of Red-bellied Macaws kept us on our toes.

One such guided walk departs nightly from Wellington’s Karori Sanctuary (or Zealandia), another runs from the lodge on the end of Kapiti. These are generally carefully managed in order not to disturb these important birds, as part of organised trips.

I have seen both Long-tailed and Tree Pangolins , Greater Cane Rat , several species of monkey and duiker, Royal Antelope , Pel’s Anomalure (a giant flying squirrel), huge casqued hornbills, Great Blue Turacos and numerous other birds and mammals for sale along the roadsides.
