Parrots also flew overhead and the nearby forest gave us a few more tanager species, a glimpse of a Slaty-breasted Tinamou , and prolonged views of a tiny, prized Pied Puffbird. That afternoon, a trip to the Pueblo Nuevo area brought us to a marsh next to primary rainforest. The Pied Puffbird is regular in this part of Costa Rica.

Early morning is of course birding prime time and a pre-breakfast stroll around our lodge produced sightings of the lovely Orange-bellied Parrot , which we tracked down to a nesting hole right next to the restaurant. White-collared Pigeon Although endemic (but shared now with Eritrea), this is a common city pigeon found in all areas of higher elevation in Ethiopia.

The afternoon birds also included Capped Heron , Mealy Parrot , Drab Water Tyrant , Amazonian Tyrannulet , Green-tailed Jacamar and more than 40 Sand-colored Nighthawks. and near-endemic Golden-backed Uakari monkeys ( Cacajao melanocephalus ). I was utterly surprised with their presence, much more than they were with mine.

To the right of the toucan, a Scaled Pigeon still rests comfortably, while one of many pairs of Orange-winged Parrots flies past in the background. We also saw a small group of Guianan Red Howler Monkeys feeding nearby. Channel-billed Toucans were in abundance, calling from the canopy. Turquoise Tanager.

It’s been a while since I observed a parrot in a palm tree above my head. Other wildlife includes Phayre’s Leaf Monkey. Well, that tells a lot about me: it’s a 40l plane carry-on type (which I will carry on as my day-pack, too). I clearly miss travelling, long distance travelling. I miss the tropics.

Upon our arrival in late afternoon we explored the nearby Red-capped Manakin Trail and saw a pair of Tawny-faced Quail and managed to photograph a hauler monkey, Spot-crowned Antvireo and a Black-headed Antthrush at dusk. On a couple of stops we manage a nice picture for an Mealy Amazon parrot while it filled up with some seeds.

My cabin had a pair of Grey Parrots in a hollow tree, an Upcher’s Warbler , and a Black-bellied Paradise-flycatcher. Resident Red-tailed Monkeys, Vervet Monkeys, and Bushbabies are fun to watch but they do throw “stuff” at your cabin. The lodge serves great food and has a fridge full of cold Tuskers.

You might find African Grey Parrot or Hartlaub’s Ducks drawn to the salty water of the baïs or Bare-cheeked Trogons and Blue Malkohas in the trees. Next, came small flocks of Red-fronted Parrots screeching overhead with the odd African Grey thrown in for good measure. Truly fantastic. Of course this is just a single morning in a very small part of Ghana and there is so much more to see!
