Because of its distance to the mainland, Hawaii is home to over 60 species of endemic birds. Over time, the webbing in its toes has decreased, and its longer lakes and shorter wings also make walking easier for this species. Ah Hawaii, land of beautiful beaches, surfing, warm weather, and unique birds.

So far we have seen Impala, Duiker, Greater Kudu, Mongoose, Zebra and warthogs around the neighborhood, and yard. In the same first day plus a couple of hours, my Africa bird count is at 66 species. The house is a four bedroom, four bath two story, with a deck running around three sides of the upper story, great for wildlife viewing.

Cape Mongoose are also easy to see. The deep reedbeds and pools hide many species, including some hard-to-see hippos! You can also get Black-necked Grebe here (Eared Grebe to Americans) and if for some reason you don’t want to see Greater Flamingos in a drainage ditch in the rest of the city you can see them here instead.

In some regions of the world, the carnivore landscape is taken up by many different cats at the middle and larger range, and by things like civets and mongoose at the smaller end. Also, feral Cats on islands seem to be a serious problem, causing the extirpation of some indigenous species. They are invasive species.

But, as with so many other species, these birds have been left to do their own whistle blowing. West Indian Whistling Ducks are the largest of the eight different whistling duck species.
