My camera and binoculars, protected by the light coat I had packed, were wet but fully functional. The vast majority were Western Gulls , which, happily, cannot be seen in central Mexico. It would have been a typical rainy California day for, say, the month of January, with steady drizzle punctuated by more substantial showers.

Fed by the freshwater of Henderson Creek, the bay eventually flows into the Gulf of Mexico. Unlike many other estuaries in this part of Florida, Rookery Bay is protected by the Estuarine Research Reserve system, and remains almost entirely undeveloped. My friend Savanna and I rose at dawn, gulped down coffee and then hit the best birding hotspots on Cedar Key, wracking up hundreds of summer species before lunchtime.
