Ovenbirds (but not the Ovenbird)

10,000 Birds

Here in Trinidad & Tobago we live up to our reputation of being a comfortable introduction to the world of Neotropical birding – we only have ten (out of a staggering three hundred) furnariids. The third spinetail is a complete forest denizen and spends its time hopping through leaf litter, searching for arthropods.

More Encouragement to Bird at Home

10,000 Birds

These all added to the overarching foreboding feeling of the moment – after all it was the 59th anniversary of the independence of Trinidad & Tobago. Nothing could move around in the leaf litter without full attention from this Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl. I spent the rest of the day with this bird.

Into Guyana’s Interior

10,000 Birds

On Trinidad, the banks of the largest rivers are never more than a stone’s throw apart. Driving slowly along the entrance road to the lodge we came upon a lone Marail Guan dabbling in the leaf litter nearby. As an islander, the river crossing was truly remarkable.
