Dead Sea Lions in Puget Sound - Again

Critter News

Washington wildlife officials say eight sea lions have been found dead in the Puget Sound region in recent weeks — all apparently shot. The bodies of seven sea lions with bullet wounds were recently found on the Nisqually River. On Monday, a sea lion was found dead on West Seattle’s Lincoln Park beach. The animal protection group Seal Sitters says a necropsy showed that the sea lion had suffered a shark bite and had twisted intestines in addition to a bullet wound.

Record Year for Sick Seals in San Pedro,CA

Critter News

Each one of the sleek, whiskered sea lions recovering at the Marine Mammal Care Center at Fort MacArthur in San Pedro has its own story. But they are all seriously ill with malnutrition, gaping wounds from fishing line injuries, broken and scarred fins, busted jaws or brain damage from domoic acid poisoning. Even though it has been a record year for sick harbor seals, sea lions and elephant seals, experts say it could get much worse. From the Contra Costa Times.

And the morning before the Mkuze pack of Painted Wolves, or African Wild Dogs, had been very close to one of the park’s few Lions, as far as tracking collars had told. And the two species were not inclined to get on, by which I mean that Lions will kill other large predators including Painted Wolves. A Lion had attacked the pack, and this poor pup had taken the brunt of the attack. But a Lion attack is not a snaring.

They pointed out the puncture wounds, likely infected with bacteria that could quickly kill. It’s the same reason so many people now cut up their plastic six-pack holders — because the connection between their soda and the strangled sea lion becomes obvious, visual and intimate. This blog is written by writer, photographer, and animal advocate Ingrid Taylar. Years ago, I became a wildlife volunteer and advocate because of a cat who caught a bird.

These vast and rugged lands of savanna, hills, gorges and rivers still protect some of Ethiopia’s largest extant herds of typical African savanna game, including African Elephant, African Buffalo, Giraffe, Lion, Leopard, African Wild Dog and numerous species of grazers. They adorn their bodies with decorative scarification, a painful process of slicing into the skin and rubbing the wounds with charcoal.

A morning in a Kalahari Leopard’s life

10,000 Birds

People are often surprised that large predators kills smaller species but its actually a common phenomenon and I have previously seen a Leopard carrying a dead African Wild Cat at Punda Maria in Kruger National Park and Lions killing a Black-backed Jackal in Namibia’s Etosha National Park. Finally when she arrived, she effortlessly scaled a tall tree and reappeared on an open horizontal branch where she proceeded to lick some blood from the Wild Cat’s puncture wounds.

Striding Snake-killers

10,000 Birds

They typically dispatch a snake by stomping on it with their heavily armored legs and feet, accurately directing their rear talons at the skull to effect a swift mortal wound to the head. As do a diverse suite of other wildlife from lions and zebras to ground squirrels and meerkats. There is no raptor quite so removed from the typical confines of what a bird of prey should look and behave like.
