Sani Pass – a Drakensberg birding gem

Originally considered monotypic, two species are now recognized. Drakensberg (or Orange-breasted) Rockjumper is a Drakensberg Mountain species whose range is shared with the tiny landlocked kingdom of Lesotho. One of the Drakensberg Rockjumper ’s most reliable stake-outs is Sani Pass, a winding 4×4 track from the village of Himeville into the mountain kingdom of Lesotho. Males of this species are more brightly colored in their non-breeding winter plumage.

This ruled out some excellent species like Cape Eagle Owl, Violet Wood-hoopoe, African Finfoot and Half-collared Kingfisher and I was still left with 36 species. This was tough because this excluded species that occur in two countries within South Africa’s geographical area, Lesotho and Swaziland. The korhaans are a group of small bustards and South Africa has 7 species. The Southern Black Korhaan is the only species that extends to Cape Town.

But I have visited Guatemala, Lesotho and Zimbabwe to actually visit them and count them, even though I spent less time in them than I did Zurich. Well-travelled birders will recognise Cattle Egrets following the steps of hippo or African Buffalo , and Black-crowned Night Herons , but more African species occur in the form of the massive Goliath Heron , the smaller Squacco Heron , and the highly distinctive Black Egret , famous for creating a canopy with its wings to hunt small fish.

The trip itself gave me a chance to experience rural areas of South Africa, bird the tiny country of Lesotho, see a lot of larks and cisticolas (small brownish birds whose identification challenges make sparrow identification look simple), three turacos in one day, and this incredible Narina Trogon (which I had also seen on the Safari, but not half as clear or close). We observed far fewer Lesser Flamingos, a near-threatened species. I wanted Penguins. And Sunbirds.
