In fact, of all the world’s pelican species, only the Brown Pelican and Peruvian Pelican perform those plunges. In 1961 they stopped breeding in Louisiana and a few years later disappeared altogether, prompting the legislature to name them the state bird in 1966. In 1970 the Brown Pelican was listed as nationally endangered.

The official Florida checklist counts over 500 species, and thus Florida citizens had a wealth of State Bird candidates to choose from when they named the Florida state bird in 1927. Perhaps it was their relative rarity, compared to now, combined with their varied songs that prompted the Florida legislature to vote in this widespread species.

” It comes as no surprise then that the governor proclaimed the Brown Thrasher the state bird in 1953 , and the legislature followed suit in 1970. Thrashers’ color patterns are similar to thrush species, with reddish backs and spotted breasts.

It turns out that the women’s clubs had already chosen the wren , but the legislature disagreed. It’s no surprise then that they are currently an IUCN species of Least Concern. Though South Carolina first chose the Northern Mockingbird as its state bird, in 1948 the general assembly changed its mind.

As it is a common sight throughout New England, it is no surprise that this chickadee species is also the state bird of Massachusetts. Hall wrote to the legislature with his suggestion.
