Our wonderful daughter-in-law buys groceries for us each Monday, and we have a few other things delivered. But when a single Turkey Vulture slowly rode the thermals up the mountainside, I had to take a picture. Turkey Vultures can be surprisingly handsome birds when their silvery primaries catch the light. Turkey Vulture.

So when this more-favorable autumn came along, my taking up turkey duty again was a non-negotiable. Unfortunately, my daughter, son-in-law, and daughter-in-law all work for Mexican entities that do not give them the day off, so the celebration was moved to Saturday.

Sometimes they show up in February if we get hints of an early spring, along with Turkey Vultures, Killdeer, Red-winged Blackbirds, and a few other eager and opportunistic early migrants. But it’s more often the case that I see my first-of-year Great Blue Heron in late March or even early April.

A couple of different work-related friends of both my mother in law and father in law have cabins up north, and most of them are in the same general vicinity. Our most notable sighting is probably many dozen Wild Turkeys in various flocks. It will be followed by windy weather tomorrow and things including the birds will dry off.

Turkey Vultures , American Crows , and Red-tailed Hawks continue to patrol the skies. What I’m really excited about, however, are the new birds I’ve added to the list for my father-in-law’s extended yard. I don’t usually get away for real, which is to say focused, bird watching during this wild weekend.

Benjamin Franklin was famously not happy about the decision to use the Bald Eagle as a symbol of the United States (he preferred the Wild Turkey ). From France he wrote to his daughter expressing his displeasure: For my own part I wish the Bald Eagle had not been chosen the Representative of our Country. He is a Bird of bad moral Character.
