An Open Letter to Outdoor/Feral Cat Supporters

I have received countless numbers of wild birds mangled and/or killed by outdoor/feral cats, such as the Orange-crowned Warbler pictured here. Can you convince yourselves that your cat does not kill birds, when statistics show pet cats only bring home 23% of their kills? I have been a wild bird rehabilitator for 25 years.

Mountain Gorilla Ranger Slain in the Congo

Protecting mountain gorillas in the Congo is dangerous work. Just last week, a 33-year-old ranger was killed by Mai Mai rebels. Another ranger was wounded in the attack and a rebel was captured. Mai Mai rebels are described as community-based militia groups frequently involved in banditry.

Dedicated keepers at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust's Nairobi Elephant Nursery in Kenya protect baby Shukuru from the cold and rain, and the risk of pneumonia, with a custom-made raincoat. Her deep wounds were filled with maggots. A mobile vet unit was able to tranquilize her, clean her wounds, and extract the spear.

We tried to sight and count the pack twice every day so that if any of the dogs got snared we’d know quickly and could get a vet in to dart them, free them and clean up the wound.
