Kill the Sea Lions Before They Kill Again!

Let's pick the sea lions! Portland judge said Wednesday the Northwest states can kill hungry sea lions on the Columbia River. Judge Michael Mosman’s ruling means Washington, Oregon and Idaho can shoot or remove up to 85 sea lions next year. Mosman denied an attempt by the Humane Society of the United States to stop the killings. The group’s Sharon Young says fisheries managers are using the sea lions as scapegoats. CA Wildlife Official Photographed with Dead Mountain Lion

Critter News

Outcry is growing against one of California’s top wildlife officials after a photo of him holding a dead mountain lion surfaced online last week. Dan Richards, president of the California Fish and Game Commission, is shown in the photo, holding a mountain lion he reportedly hunted and killed in Idaho, according to Western Outdoor Press, which published the photo. Hunting mountain lion is legal in Idaho, but illegal in California. What was this idiot thinking?

I can’t help noticing that you’ve just posted an angry story about Cecil the Lion on your timeline. I get that you’re really angry, I mean, he was a popular lion and yes, his cute widdle cubs will probably die to, but I can’t help feeling you’ve kind of missed the point a bit, and well, ending all hunting in Africa will not solve much and maybe make things worse and… No, no, I’m not a hunter. And that lions are really cute. Hi there.

Though I wrote about the mountain lions of the Kofa National Wildlife Refuge a couple of times, it was never with the breadth and depth that Deb Durant of Invisible Voices has. This is a surreal situation in my opinion because, as Ron writes, "all 3 Alternatives in the DEA allow for the killing of Kofa lions, just at different rates and at different geographic locations."

Salmon Threatened by Humans, Not Sea Lions

Critter News

Here's someone else who agrees with me that sea lions are not the true threat to salmon. It's just easier to kill sea lions that to break down dams. She highlights dams, but that is only one of the four H's (hydro, harvest, habitat and hatcheries) that are obliterating this beautiful creature. I think this opinion is pretty wide-spread.

Well, Copenhagen Zoo is back in the news; a few weeks after killing a giraffe and feeding it to some lions, it went and killed some of those same lions. Plenty of ink was spilt when the giraffe was killed, and those that were interested into why a zoo filled with people who love animals and put up with low wages to help them might do something that seems to go against that have had many chances to do so. Losing a few non-breeding lions in zoos a great deal less.

This becomes especially true when one realizes that vegetarians often argue that a reason that it is prima facie wrong to eat animals is that animals must be killed to provide the food. Moreover, it is unclear why the dog’s wants should overrule the alleged prima facie wrong of eating meat, especially when this wrong is based on the alleged prima facie wrong of killing an animal. Should vegetarians promote a society that trains lions and tigers to eat such meat substitutes?
