The Warbler Brewery – Parula Pilsner

10,000 Birds

At the time, I was just getting into birding and while I’d already been to Jamaica Bay a few times, spring migration was an entirely new phenomenon to me and I’d only seen one warbler species up to that point ( Yellow Warblers at Jamaica Bay, in fact, exactly a week before my Prospect Park trip).

Best Bird of the Weekend (Second of April 2016)

10,000 Birds

I don’t know which legislative branch to appeal to, but there ought to be a law that mandates life birds on a birder’s birthday. Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend was a cooperative Blue-gray Gnatcatcher at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge that contentedly foraged while Corey digiscoped. Sure beats cake! How about you?

Best Bird of the Weekend (Third of April 2016)

10,000 Birds

I was privileged to help my mother-in-law see her first Common Loon in its summer finery, but for me, the highlight amidst the myriad ducks and grebes was a new regiment of Ruddy Ducks in the waterfowl mix at Conesus Lake. These seasons of transition make for exciting birding. How about you? What was your best bird of the weekend?

Best Bird of the Weekend (Great Backyard Bird Count 2012)

10,000 Birds

This weekend was dedicated to enjoying the company of my visiting mother, brother, sister-in-law, and niece. But on his boat ride around lower New York Harbor and Jamaica Bay on Sunday he found himself appreciating the Herring Gulls more than any other species. Have you been participating in the Great Backyard Bird Count ?

Backyard Birds: Looking Through the Glass by Glen Apseloff

10,000 Birds

There’s a house I’ve long dreamed of perched next to Jamaica Bay that has Curlew Sandpiper and Ruff as possibilities, with a good enough scope; heck, a flock of Wood Storks once flew over the very average suburban Atlanta back yard of the Inimitable Todd’s very average brother and sister-in-law and thus got on my life list.

An update that of course thrills me is that Jamaica has decided to not grant permission for the introduction of greyhound racing (read the l etter from Bruce Golding, Jamaica's Prime Minister--it's only two sentence long, but it does the job). A less-than-thrilling update is that South Africa is still considering dog racing.
