You might recognize one of the owls in the video below. VICE went to Italy to play, squeeze, hug, and cuddle some of the most adorable owls in the land! They are all very sweet. Luckily they made a video that we can share with you!

Just before I left for Italy, I took a trip to the Lee Metcalf Wildlife Refuge for a healthy dose of migration. There’s always the possibility of Great Gray Owls , Northern Pygmy Owls , and Boreal Owls moving south and/or downhill in the colder months. Will a Northern Hawk Owl come perch on my roof?

The real Gung-Ho, Kung-Fu birders would have drove to this site at midnight and just slept in the car or looked for owls until the dawn chorus in excellent middle elevation rainforest but since we have families, and I hate being exhausted and zombie-eyed from lack of sleep, more leisurely birding was just peachy.

In Queens, I periodically read local news articles describing how Con Edison is trying gentle means of persuasion to get the birds to move—spikes, sprays, sound machines, mechanical owls. There are a lot of pet psittacines out there that escape or are released. I also read more anecdotal stores about harsher measures, mainly nest removal.

Vidoz’s flycatchers, for example, tend to have a plumpish look and deeply inked color patches, while Tofte’s meticulously drawn hawks and owls show off their detailed patterns and his hummingbirds are often accompanied by the flowers from which they feed. Tintaya’s woodpeckers also nicely feature tree (and cactus!)
