The scientific species name of the Rusty-naped Pitta oatesi honors Eugene William Oates (1845-1911), an English civil servant in India and naturalist. He published a number of books on birds of India and Burma, making me wonder how hard all these overseas civil servants really worked in their day jobs.

Sher Singh, one of the kingpins of the countrywide wildlife trafficking racket involved in stealing eight common marmosets from Alipore Zoo on August 9, walked off a train in the wee hours of Friday. Tags: India wildlife trafficking. Unfortunate. Now this guy gets to commit more crimes against animals.

Still hard for me to believe that these guys live outside of zoos. A resident in India but also included in the list of the world`s 100 worst invasive alien species. Purple Sunbird. Take that, hummingbirds. Purple Swamphen. Almost vulgar, these colors. Red-breasted Flycatcher. Red collared Dove. Red-vented Bulbul.

There’s a Three-striped Palm Squirrel by the side of the track, while Jungle Bush Quails are running across it in front of our Maruti Gypsy, almost the official safari vehicle of India. At least 274 tigers have died in India in the last four years, more than 70 per cent of them due to poaching. Some results may already be visible.

The Rose-ringed Parakeet naturally occurs in two isolated areas: a thin strip across Africa just south of the Sahara, and south Asia where it is mostly found in India with smaller ranges in adjacent countries. Heidelberg Zoo to the south-west of Neuenheimer Feld, all over the place but most often at the seals enclosure and the adjacent kiosk.
