From Vietnam News. Dr Scott Roberton, head of Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), said that hunting wild animals for meat and trafficking had been happening in many countries, especially developing ones. In Viet Nam, hunting and trade in wild animals had been alarming, he said. Sounds just awful.

It has not been seen in its small home range in central Vietnam since around 2000. Concern for the future of this species is such that the WPA and BirdLife International-Vietnam Programme are working together to organize immediate action. Conservationists searched intensively in 2011 but found none.

It inhabits rather dry areas within a region notorious for being one of the rainiest parts of the world, and is thus patchily distributed from Burma through Laos, Cambodia, parts of Thailand and south China, all the way to Vietnam. Then there is a gap of around 2,000 km (or 1,200 miles). Surprise, surprise.

Here in New Zealand te only potential big tick would be a lost vagrant painted snipe, and we’ve already established that I don’t enjoy that kind of vagrant hunting. I’m fairly sure the only family I’m missing in Europe is the Wallcreeper (Tichodromadidae), assuming you don’t lump it with the nuthatches.
