Well, they were all memorable, but these two involve subjects people have asked about without fail—the Taj Mahal and Tigers. Target: Tigers. Our local Ranthambhore guide told us that a tiger had been located on our route.

Although I love dogs they're too dependent on humans, it's true that stray/feral dogs can form packs and survive in the wild a regular dog like a golden retriever would get eaten by a lion instantly. They are much more independent and still behave similarly to wild cats they are still pets and rely on humans to survive.

I had never birded this way before, and can confirm that what I had heard is true: Birds are much more tolerant of human presence when those humans are on a boat! But this Bare-necked Tiger-Heron was a real treat for me. We saw lots of the usual Heron, Egret, Cormorant, and Pelican suspects.

Not sure why they spend time in Shanghai in winter when they could come here though, but then again, I usually do not understand most of the behavior of humans either. Tiphys died either of a snakebite or of a mysterious illness but he was not killed by either a tiger or a rhinoceros. Yes, we have them in Shanghai as well.

For once, eBird gives a good description of the Asian Glossy Starling, calling it a “Fierce-looking, large songbird” As are humans, this species is fairly urbanized – it “sometimes enters urban areas to roost, e.g. in Singapore” (HBW). In Singapore, Common Redshanks mostly drink Tiger Beer.

Being a bit older myself now, I have to point out that young human males usually do not look that good, at least to me. The Blue-and-white Flycatcher is one of the few birds in which the young male looks both distinctive and rather nice. A juvenile male. The real thing: an adult male. A happier shrike.

An Ashy Drongo apparently spends approximately 71% of its time scanning (what non-scientists would probably call looking around), 9% eating (less than a typical Chinese human but much more than me), calling 7%, flying 7%, and 6% preening. In Singapore, a Tiger Shrike was observed casting a pellet after eating a large scarab beetle.

The third shrike seen in Shanghai this month was the Tiger Shrike. Surprisingly (at least from a biased human perspective), 97% of the deserters are female ( source ). The Latin species name “cristatus” is a bit of a puzzle as it means “crest” – not an obvious feature of the species, as far as I can tell.
