Leona Helmsley's Fortune Goes to Medical Research

Critter News

Over $100 million went to medical research while about $1 million went to animal welfare causes. Actually, less than $1 million dollars went to animal welfare because a portion went to guide dog associations and that is human welfare as far as I’m concerned.) But a group of trustees got together, determined she was mentally unfit at the time, and decided to “responsibly” donate to medical research instead. To human causes.

Is Medical Research on Animals REALLY the Only Way?

Critter News

The article discusses how scientists are infecting monkeys with a surrogate HIV virus that does not even lead to AIDS, begging the question of why infect them in first place if there's no real simulation of what happens in humans? Here's my response on medical research in general. I recently had a discussion about medical research using animals. This story on HIV research is one example.

European Union Screws Apes Used in Medical Research

Critter News

Here are the results of the EU flirtation with restricting research on primates. Researchers can continue most experiments on mankind's closest relatives -- chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans -- after European Union lawmakers watered down proposals to restrict testing. The European Parliament said its members had rejected that part of the proposal as it would hinder research into some forms of cancer, multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer's disease.

Seal Industry Tries to Capitalize on Medical Researchers Conjectures

Critter News

While I'm not a fan of using animal hearts for transplants, I'm far more sympathetic to that than to simply using their parts for human vanity consumption. Dr. Philippe Pibarot has been studying seal heart valves to see if they might be a better transplant option for humans than those from cows or pigs, believing they may be more durable than the other animal tissue. The research at Laval University is still in the earliest stages.

Animal Researchers Promote Sob Stories

Critter News

I don't support animal research and I have no sympathy for animal researchers. I don't believe they are working for human welfare. I would never advocate violence against a researcher. I almost quit a book club a year ago because one of the members is a proponent of medical research. I posted on this blog about quitting because of the New Iberia scandal in Louisiana in which the Humane Society found primates being abused.

Biomedical Foundation Launches Campaign to Show Animal Research is Grrrrrrreat!

Critter News

The Foundation for Biomedical Research (FBR) announced today it has launched a one-year national animal research education campaign. Since 2004, public support for humane animal research to advance human and animal health has fallen 10 points. Growing Number of Scientists Question Animal Research

Critter News

The feud between animal rights activists and researchers is among the bitterest in science. But many researchers - although adamant that animal research remains critical to finding cures and expanding medical knowledge - have come to concede that using creatures as human stand-ins is unnecessary for many procedures. RSPCA Collects 68,000 Signatures Supporting an End to Animal Research

Critter News

I really believe the more people learn about what research animals go through, the more common decency becomes a factor. But how many animal research supporters (non-scientists) actually step into a room and observe an experiment? 68,315 people signed an online RSPCA petition stating "We, the undersigned, call on the British Government to work towards ending the use of animals in experiments, replacing them with humane alternatives.".

Read an Analysis of Slate's Animal Research Series

Critter News

Animal Person , someone who is clearly smarter than me, has a great analysis about the recent "Pepper" series in Slate about animal research. At least he didn't try to make me feel happy or warm and fuzzy about animal research. I'm not saying he was the most compassionate person in the world, and I'm not saying that I admire or like him, but at least there was some self-criticism and, yes, some guilt there that I find lacking in the animal researchers I've encountered.

Looking for Books about Animal Experimentation

Critter News

Apparently, there is a lot of argument out there than animal experimentation is even good for humans. A drug may work on an animal, but fail miserably on a human. Drugs are not always predictable from human to human even. And how can one expect an animal with a human disease to react the way the human body does? And, in this day and age, do we really need to be stuck with this archaic and barbaric method of research?

UK Records Increase in Animal Testing

Critter News

The increase marks the greatest leap in animal use in medical research since 1986, when the government introduced new auditing procedures. The growth in animal experiments reflects an expansion in biomedical research in Britain and is driven by advances in genetics and the development of new drugs that must be tested rigorously in monkeys before they are allowed to be given to humans. A Trip to an Animal Lab

Critter News

In a brief tour of a particular biotech research company, I was taken to the animal lab. But when I got closer, I read, "Animal research opens minds." This adorable poster that draws you in to the sweet faces of these animals basically proclaims that it is a good thing to use their bodies for medical research, which almost always leads to pain and death. It certainly doesn't fill me with confidence in these people's skills in compassion and humane care.

I occasionally read Scienceblog when there is mention of animal research issues. It's a site that, according to its own description, is half reader blogs and half press releases from research institutions. I'm not going into why I do not support animal research. That's why I truly wish someone would explain to me to me why humans are so unique and of such higher value than anything else.

Animal Ethics

To inflict death or pain on animals for scientific or medical research is wrong morally, and ought to be prohibited. This does not mean that animals may never be deliberately harmed or become subjects of research. They may be killed in order to protect the health of humans (and other animals) if they are infected with a serious disease and cannot be quarantined. They may be used in benign research such as teaching chimpanzees to understand and use sign language.

Why I Question Animal Testing 2.1

Critter News

Oftentimes, scientists seem to think that they just need to waive their PhDs and research projects in everyone's faces and we should all shut up and bow our heads to their great wisdom. Small biotech companies, many of them founded by university researchers to exploit their discoveries, proliferated rapidly.

These are core issues to me that are an integral part to who I am as a human being.

Why I Question Animal Testing 2.2

I particularly question the use of chimpanzees in medical research. From what I recall, chimpanzees share at least 95 percent of human DNA, although the number that floats around the most is 98.6 If chimpanzees have consciousness, if they are capable of abstractions, do they not have what until now has been described as "human rights"? Deconstructing Slate's "Pepper" Series

Animal Person

Beloved family pet Dalmatian, Pepper, is stolen, and after several weeks of searching is discovered to have been experimented on at a hospital and died on the table when researchers tried to implant her with an experimental cardiac pacemaker. For Engber, who dispassionately describes procedures most of the time, the "advances" in the medical care of humans are all well worth what he and other vivisectionists do to dogs and other sentient nonhumans.

She supports medical research on animals. One scene has the author entering the part of the hospital where the research animals are. This woman, who I now mentally call "THE VIVISECTOR," defended medical research. She said that there were guidelines on how to treat animals and that, in medical ethics, they are considered "sacrifices." The descriptions of the research subjects are very roundabout, but still horrific to me.
