I’ve lived in Queens for eight years now and have visited Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge over one hundred times while I’ve been here. Every spring American Redstarts get back to Jamaica Bay and set up territories and I’ve never failed to learn exactly where those territories are.

Fledgling Yellow Warblers at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge

But after a long weekend in Niagara Falls and Toronto with my extended family, which featured virtually no birding, I was more than willing to get out at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge on Tuesday morning (the 4th of July) to see what was out and about. Such an ugly little creature has to beg in order to get any attention or food!

On Saturday morning I was out on the East Pond of Jamaica Bay with Carlos and Anthony enjoying a mid-September search for shorebirds. We watched the bird for awhile as it foraged and though the injury was painful to contemplate for we humans the bird seemed to be getting by alright.
