The tiercels (young Peregrines) must deal with Golden Eagles, Ravens, adult Peregrines, and foxes; they must also learn to navigate the skies and make their own kills, luckily these skills appear to be innately learned. Coyotes took carrion from young Condors and then killed the weakest ones. It’s not easy.

During some seasons, millions of male pheasants are killed. In Hawaii, they are found as high as 11,000 feet ! Since then their range has spread across the United States and southern Canada, and they remain a sought-after game species. These males are striking.

This particular example of flexibility comes from Tern Island, in French Frigate Shoals to the north of Hawaii. That said there is nothing to suggest that the Black-footed Albatross actually killed the Laysan, there was no shortage of already dead chicks around. It shouldn’t be a surprise, but it still is sometimes.
