My name is Kalu Afasi, I am a birding guide from Ghana, a country in West Africa. In the more recent past, I have founded my own company, MALIMBE TOURS, also known as GHANA BIRD TOURS. I chose the name Malimbe Tours because the first bird I ever set eyes on through a pair of binoculars was one of our dazzling malimbe species.

An annual highlight is hearing his first Cuckoo of the year at home in Suffolk, England, which he rates as almost as exciting as watching White-necked Rockfowls in Ghana or Steller’s Eiders in North Norway. Not only eggs but nestling birds of many species fall prey to the Jay.” It’s a different matter in the spring.

For me and my birding opportunities, this means Accra in Ghana. Still, if you find yourself with the chance to visit Ghana, grab it forcefully. But at the end of last year, I eventually confirmed one in the University of Ghana, Botanic Gardens, Accra. Sad, but there you go.

White-necked or Yellow-headed Picathartes, Bonkro, Ghana. They diverged at approximately the same time as the rockjumpers (two quite unique bird species endemic to Southern Africa and now in their own family), and as a result for a while were even placed in the same family. In some cases the data are outdated, e.g. Costa Rica has 900 and not 800 species, but I made no corrections, remaining faithful to the original map data. Attila Steiner, who I was lucky enough to meet while I was in Hungary , was ecstatic to see a rare rail in Ghana: It was my last afternoon in Ankasa Reserve, Ghana. I even managed to shoot a video with hands trembling of excitement, probably a first of the species. It was a mythical bird I didn’t ever expect to see.
