This is what happens when people choose their pet birds on visual factors alone without taking vocalizations into account. The local flock of geese (mostly Pink-footed, Swan Goose) is not “countable” while the Egyptian Geese and Ruddy Shelducks that occasionally turn up are. Very stupid thing to do.

Once upon a time, people and especially children felt free to interact with wild birds in any way that would satisfy their curiousity — watching and learning, yes, but also harassing and chasing, collecting eggs and nests, stealing nestlings as “pets”, and killing birds for amateur taxidermy efforts.

It’s easy to choke it with food while you’re feeding it and chances are good that you’d raise the chick like a pet and you’d end up with an adult bird that doesn’t know what its predators are and seek humans for food and mating…aka an unreleasable bird. Young waterfowl are their own weird set of problems.

As the Hooded Cranes know that I am a consultant, they sometimes ask me whether they should forage together with geese or preferably seek areas in which geese are not present. Seek geese in meadows and mudflats, but avoid them in paddy fields ( source ). I am giving them the typical consultant answer: It depends.

It’s easy to observe this attachment behavior in parrots, especially pets. While we’re used to declarations that our pet parrots “love” us just as we love them, and they can be quite demonstrative in showing their affection, the evidence is thinner for wild birds. Love includes elements of need, but primarily those of affection.
