Many refuges are strategically located along major flyways, allowing ducks and geese to hopscotch their way up the continent to northern breeding grounds and back down again. Indeed, many refuges were created specifically for migratory waterfowl and are managed for their benefit.

The best place I could come up with that was within a short drive of my in-laws’ place in Yorba Linda was the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary in nearby Irvine, only a quick twenty-minute drive away. The goose flies out early with a flock of Canada Geese so if you want to see it get there at or shortly after dawn!

It was also a perhaps belated realization by these chefs and their fans that a law signed eight years ago is truly taking effect and is about to change the way they do business drastically, putting California on the front lines of the battle about force-feeding ducks and geese to produce the silky liver delicacy.

Two were paired classics — shots of migrating Snow Geese. Before the main characters were released from prison, the geese were high overhead, inaccessible white spots against blue skies (so distant and out of focus, in fact, that I first misidentified them as Northern Gannets.)

These refuges support huge numbers of swans, geese, ducks, cranes, and shorebirds as they hopscotch their way to breeding grounds in the north. The System also helps implement the Endangered Species Act and other federal conservation laws. Birders have a unique interest in the status of the National Wildlife Refuge System.

The area has a law in place to prevent attracting deer, you can have a bird feeder, but you can’t offer food on the ground. Granted, the law is written poorly, but the man was given several warnings and insisted on feeding birds on the ground and attracted huge flocks of ducks and no doubt raccoons at night.

Tormod had brought the Arctic weather with him so in a howling gale and regular snow flurries we visited several sites catching up with some Whooper Swans, Willow T**s and Greenland White-fronted Geese before heading south to the city for some welcoming fish and chips and a visit to the Tyne Kittiwake colony.
