Moral Vegetarianism, Part 11 of 13

Animal Ethics

For an explanation of this feature, click on “Moral Vegetarianism” at the bottom of this post. The Argument from Human Grain Shortage All of the clearly moral arguments for vegetarianism given so far have been in terms of animal rights and suffering. New moral vegetarianism, however, rests on moral arguments couched in terms of human welfare. This argument also differs from traditional ones in its selective and restrictive moral prohibitions against eating flesh.

For Your Health, the Planet & the Animals: VBM

I mean, where do they get their morals from? And it limits you in that you can't just go anywhere to watch a football game if you plan to eat anything. I recently watched Earthlings and cried the whole way through. There has to be something I can do to reduce all of the suffering of the animals we use as food, I thought.

Evidently I'm a bit late to the game. The good ones are morally superior to the bad ones because they don't eat humans. The Little Big Year-week 46: All this fun comes to an end

10,000 Birds

For a good portion of the year, it became a numbers game, and my pure enjoyment of the birds for what they are, went away. I don’t really know if it was the relief from the pressure of the numbers game, the beautiful morning hike, Matt’s fresh energy, or finding that amazing warbler, but somewhere in the day, birds became fun again. We have arrived at the end of our little adventure, which has come to be known as “The Little Big Year”.

Should is not a Solution

10,000 Birds

My post last week where I defended game hunting as a conservation tool has, unaccountably, encountered a certain amount of push back. Who would have thought that a post defending hunting game in general would have not been universally acclaimed? I will address two of them in the new year, namely, “Is hunting moral at all?” I’ll refer you to Charlie’s impassioned essay against game hunting again, and you can see what I’m talking about.

10,000 Birds

While the hunting of game with trained birds of prey can be a controversial topic among birders , falconry was a valuable early source of information on birds, and its history, culture, and imagery continue to fascinate bird lovers, as we shall see.

The North American Model of Wildlife Conservation and Who Pays for It

10,000 Birds

Increased scrutiny of practices long considered the norm in wildlife management, including predator hunts, commercial trapping, the legal culling of non-game birds like American Crows, and some of the research protocols used to track and translocate wild animals. A new willingness among scientists to consider certain moral and ethical implications with respect to wild animals, where previously utilitarian ideas prevailed, including ideas of intrinsic value.

Even the government has gotten in on the game. If you are like most people, you think that it is seriously morally wrong to contribute to unnecessary animal suffering. Switching to a vegan diet will help you to live your life in accordance with your own deeply held moral values and will, thereby, help you to live an authentic life , a meaningful life of integrity.

Thrilling Turkey Facts

10,000 Birds

Yes, the Wild Turkey is North America’s largest game bird. This is not to be confused with the highly addictive computer game with the same name. Benjamin Franklin disapproved of the selection of the Bald Eagle as our national bird, calling it “a Bird of bad moral Character.” With the arrival of another (American) Thanksgiving, it’s time to trot out the turkey facts. This day of thanks is, after all, known as Turkey Day.

Come@Me: Hunting Is Not Conservation

10,000 Birds

The definition of the word HUNT is “to chase or search for game or other wild animals for the purpose of catching or killing.” Lacey of Iowa introduced the nation’s first wildlife-protection law, which banned the interstate shipping of unlawfully killed game. Thank God most human beings have developed a more modern view of wildlife and acknowledge that some animals display sufficient consciousness and self-awareness to deserve moral consideration.
