A New Wildlife Refuge Pass: Fellow Birders, Help Us Help You

Since we first launched the Wildlife Conservation Stamp Project, we’ve made our case to thousands of birders and photographers. We also knew at the start that a significant percentage of our effort would be devoted to simply convincing people that a new funding tool is not just an imperative, but also something that would have the support of thousands and millions of non-hunting Refuge visitors. We’re relaunching the project as the Wildlife Conservation Pass.

The North American Model of Wildlife Conservation and Who Pays for It

10,000 Birds

The North American Model of Wildlife Conservation (NAMWC) is often held up as the best system of wildlife management and conservation in the world. Developed in the post-frontier era, the NAMWC helped put a stop to wanton wildlife destruction in an era where many species were being hunted and trapped ruthlessly to the brink of extinction. Setting land aside in the public domain in perpetuity is probably the most substantive thing we do for wildlife conservation.

Duck Numbers And Duck Stamp Sales No Longer Correlate

10,000 Birds

The number of people who hunt waterfowl in the US has declined since the mid 1990s. Sales of duck stamps have funded the preservation of wetlands and other wildlife habitat, which in turn has supported an increase in waterfowl populations. Historically, there has been a link between duck stamp sales and the duck population, with the causal link between stamp sales and duck numbers being the wildlife preservation areas supported by stamp revenues.

Animal Ethics

No wildlife species, especially a migratory one shared in common by many nations, can withstand commercial hunting without end. In the United States, we learned this lesson just in time to rescue our migratory waterfowl and other prized game species from oblivion at the beginning of the 20th century. All commercial hunting was banned, and those species were carefully managed for sport hunting only. To the Editor: “ Last Act for the Bluefin ” (editorial, Nov.

Africa’s Big Five and Little Five

10,000 Birds

Originally a hunting term, the Big Five were the most dangerous and prized targets of the great white hunters on safari. Snow in the Air

The population growth seems to be linked to increased winter survival — the result of increased agricultural food supply and wildlife refuges managed specifically to increase populations of ‘game’ birds to the exclusion of other goals — as well as milder Arctic breeding seasons. Attempts to curb goose populations by increasing bag limits and lengthening hunting seasons have, unsurprisingly, failed. The Varied Thrushes came back.
