Plenty of parks and forests have been protected even as the city grew. Right next to the world famous Opera House is the the Sydney Botanical Gardens, a good place to see Sulphur-crested Cockatoos , Banded Rails and large roosting groups of Grey-headed Flying-foxes. The city is a very green one.

Rats arrived on ships and cats, foxes and rabbits were all introduced and they were all detrimental to the bird population. Foxes have also been known to take their eggs and there are now numerous local groups who endeavour to help the populations of Hooded Plovers along their local coastlines.

Tongatapu and ‘Eua; Birding Southern Tonga

A combination of extinctions and proximity to Fiji means that a trip to that island group would net you pretty much all the same birds plus a whole raft of others. In particular there was a large are protected on the eastern side of the island (about a third of the island) as ‘Eua National Park.The island is less populated and quieter.
