Steven M. Wise on Legal Rights for Animals

Animal Ethics

The legal rights of nonhuman animals might first be achieved in any of three ways. For example, the Treaty of Amsterdam that came into force on May 1, 1999, formally acknowledged that nonhuman animals are “sentient beings” and not merely goods or agricultural products. The European Community and the member states signatory to the treaty are required “to pay full regard to the welfare requirements of animals.” Wise , “ The Evolution of Animal Law Since 1950 ,” chap.

Tom Regan on Endangered Species

Animal Ethics

The rights view is not opposed to efforts to save endangered species. It only insists that we be clear about the reasons for doing so. But though the rights view must look with favor on any attempt to protect the rights of any animal, and so supports efforts to protect the members of endangered species, these very efforts, aimed specifically at protecting the members of species that are endangered, can foster a mentality that is antagonistic to the implications of the rights view.

See this AP story for details. Pharmaceutically-laced water isn't just a problem for humans. It's a problem for animals, particularly aquatic animals, as well. Here is an AP story highlighting the impact these pharmaceutical substances are having on aquatic and avian species. For example, exposure to these substances is negatively impacting the reproductive abilities of some fish species, threatening their extinction.

Calgary Zoo Feeling Economic Pressure

Critter News

But don't feel too bad for them. Lanthier, a veterinarian and walrus researcher who took the helm in Calgary two years ago, says the cancellation of the polar bears exhibit might please some animal-rights extremists, but the reality is a blow to Canada's white bears. Lanthier doesn't hide his contempt for animal rights groups who lash out, without considering the role zoos play in conservation. Tags: zoos canada seals polar bear endangered species

Animal Rights is Pernicious Nonsense?

Animal Person

In " 'Animal Rights:' Pernicious Nonsense for Both Law & Public Policy ," Massachusetts attorney and "sportsman" Richard Latimer is on the mark with some concepts, and way off with others. However, both his perceptions and misconceptions are based on: 1) observing the work of PeTA and HSUS; and 2) the assumption that those two organizations are in the same category--"animal rights." Now, I know you're saying: That's not what animal rights is.

Reduce Plastics in Order to Save Marine Life

Critter News

First of all, it's gross (find your own planet to dump your trash on), but it's also dangerous for animals. There are so many fronts on the war for animal rights (and I'm increasingly believing that "war" is the right word for it) and often times it's hard to know what to do. The protection of marine animals may fall under "environmentalism," but these are artificial divisions.

How to Confront Cruelty

Critter News

I came across this 2005 book from the Society & Animals Journal titled Confronting Cruelty Moral Orthodoxy and the Challenge of the Animal Rights Movement. Why and how do people campaign on behalf of a species that is not their own? Responses to this question provide important insights into the much misunderstood animal rights movement and the people in it who challenge the moral orthodoxy that underpins our attitudes towards nonhuman animals.

I recently wrote my first check to Animals Asia. They are doing very important work on animal welfare in Asia. I especially appreciate the work they do on those horrific bear bile farms that are really just a form of torture for the animal. Protecting Your Pets from Pests and Disease

4 The Love Of Animals

We would like to thank Leslie Douglas for this great guest post! A lot of very important information for pet owners, especially as we go into the summer season. Mosquitoes bite humans and animals with no regard to species, and they bring along a number of illnesses. For humans, mosquitoes can lead to such diseases as Yellow Fever and West Nile Virus among others. For animals, the bugs can cause harmful disease and life threatening conditions.

Babies and Animals

Animal Ethics

Here is a common argument in favor of animal rights: 1. If babies have rights, then animals have rights. Animals have rights. Frey, "Animal Rights," Analysis 37 [June 1977]: 186-9.) This doesn't show that animals don't have rights, for an unsound argument can have a true conclusion; but it does show—if Frey is right—that there must be some other basis for animal rights than the one provided by this argument.

J. Baird Callicott on Wild Life

Animal Ethics

The land ethic, it should be emphasized, as Leopold has sketched it, provides for the rights of nonhuman natural beings to a share in the life processes of the biotic community. Wild animals and native plants have a particular place in nature, according to the land ethic, which domestic animals (because they are products of human art and represent an extended presence of human beings in the natural world) do not have.

Hey, What About the Great Auk?

10,000 Birds

That’s one reason, probably the biggest reason, why we don’t have centennials for animals that become extinct in the wild. The Heath Hen had gone extinct two decades before, but we could plausibly blame Mother Nature for the final knock-out events and there hadn’t been any loss of cuddly megafauna from our fair shores since then. And we did , for the Peregrine Falcon and Osprey , the Brown Pelican and Bald Eagle. Most species go extinct.

How many birds are killed by windmills and other green energy projects?

If this study is accurate (and I do not vouch for it at this time but it is a real study) cats take out about one tenth of those 10 billion birds that disappear between peak seasons. For various reasons including these I would regard this estimate to be effectively high. By-catch is the catchy word for animals that are killed from fishing that are not the fish being fished. These are the dolphins in your tuna fish, for example.

Developed in the post-frontier era, the NAMWC helped put a stop to wanton wildlife destruction in an era where many species were being hunted and trapped ruthlessly to the brink of extinction. Now, in 21st century America, we’re entertaining new considerations, in keeping with our modern understanding of wild animals and conservation. Setting land aside in the public domain in perpetuity is probably the most substantive thing we do for wildlife conservation.

Hunters go to Africa to shoot lions, and this is without question a good thing; for birds, for ecosystems, and for lions in general! Hunters are prepared to spend a lot of money for the privilege of shooting a lion.
