Florida Caverns State Park is known for one, quite obvious thing: the caverns. This fall, I stopped at Florida Caverns with two friends who had never visited before. This tiny species breeds north of Florida but returns to spend the winter here as well as in Central and South America. A Black-and-white Warbler.

A friend of mine told me, she has been seeing small groups of Swallow-tailed Kites ( Elanoides furficatus ) in the general area; in south Florida. At one of the biggest migration roost in Florida, not far from where we live, kites begin to gather by mid June. Swallow-tailed Kite near the Lake Okeechobee roost in Florida.

That will be the opening day of the 18th Annual Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival in Titusville, Florida. Florida is a great place to bird in January because in addition to the year-round species there are a host of birds that winter in the relatively balmy climate that Florida has in winter. Jayne Neville, a former wildlife rehabilitator specializing in songbirds, moved from Connecticut to Florida and immediately began making the acquaintance of all the birds in the area. Jayne had a pet carrier handy for wildlife rescue and the eagle was transported to Peace River Wildlife Center and treated for electrocution.

That being said, I found this juvenile recently at Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge. The complex headquarters at Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge , Colusa NWR , and Delevan NWR all have photo blinds that are available to reserve. Even in the Brazilian Amazon, I’ve never seen this many whistling ducks together–there were sixty at a manmade lake behind the Brevard Community College near Titusville, Florida. I don’t get a lot of life birds in North America any more, but this confiding little gent offered himself up to the list: a Florida Scrub-Jay.

The best place I could come up with that was within a short drive of my in-laws’ place in Yorba Linda was the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary in nearby Irvine, only a quick twenty-minute drive away. New England Reptile Distributers just released a video explaining a terrible incident involving the FWC (Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission). In 2021, Florida banned reticulated pythons, forcing Coffee to find homes for the pythons outside of Florida. He had a total of 120 pythons he needed to rehome.

In a rare afternoon to myself, I had driven across the Florida/Georgia border to pick up a few things in a nearby town (curbside + social distancing), and discovered a historic estate, open to the public, along the road on my way back.
