This is how it looks like: Or at sunset: A species I did not come for from Shanghai is the Black-crowned Night Heron. Its species name graydoni is in honor of Philip Newenham Graydon (1864-1940), a British planter in Sabah. Why that makes Mr. Graydon worthy of having a bird species named after him is a mystery to me.

On a recent visit I threw my bags in the hotel room and went straight there, and got over 60 species of birds in a few hours and fantastic views of Nilgai , the largest antelope in India. Commoner species include Bar-headed Geese , parakeets, shrikes, mynas and minivets. You should also see Gharial and Mugger Crocodiles there.

Drifting slower and looking closer, we observed a tiny Malachite Kingfisher hunting in the sheltered shallows. The now familiar sound of a pair of African Fish-Eagles dominated the soundscape. We had several close views as the raptors would pick up discarded fish from the many fishing boats, a relationship our guides capitalized upon.

The Common Pochard is listed as Vulnerable – not because it is particularly rare, but because of the rapid decline in its numbers (a decline of 50% within 10 years means a species is listed as Vulnerable – and a 50% loss in 10 years sounds quite dramatic and frightening indeed). The Trinidad Motmot is the only endemic species on the island. The fishing birds have it easy here. In addition to the species mentioned before, it is easy to have incredible looks at Red-crowned Woodpeckers , Barred Antshrikes , and Rufous-vented Chachalacas as they frequently are attracted to the fruit feeders.
