Feral Pigeons World Wide

10,000 Birds

Obviously, I am talking of Feral Pigeons (also called city, town or street pigeons). The scientific name of the Feral Pigeon is Columba livia domestica and that last world tells the story. Feral Pigeons are descendants of domesticated pigeons that escaped from dovecotes. In other words, unlike the Common Wood Pigeons that have entered the city parks of my native Belgrade some quarter of a century ago, the Feral Pigeons haven’t entered the cities – they originated in them.

Feral Cats in American Cities

10,000 Birds

The other day, Minneapolis, Minnesota passed a feral cat ordinance. So I put together a “carnival” (of sorts) of Feral Cat Ordinances and Issues that samples current events across the US. From the Star Tribune : Feral cats win a round at Minneapolis City Hall. So, maybe, no matter what one’s opinion may be of this idea of feral cat colonies, it can work here. There is a petition to reverse the anti-feral cat policy.

Feral Cats Are An Invasive Species in North America (and elsewhere)

10,000 Birds

Read what you want about the origin of domestic cats; the genetic evidence is not properly sampled. I find it astonishing that people argue of whether feral cats are bad for birds in North America. The plethora of approaches to the feral Cat problem is not an outcome of a diversity of great ideas; it is the ugly chimera of inappropriate compromise among biased and often poorly informed stakeholders. How many wild birds are eaten by either feral Cats or “outdoor Cats?”

Lessons Learned From 4 Years of Animal Person, Part 2

Animal Person

I'd do my "Let's deconstruct" shtick ( here 's a sample about Oprah) and I probably should have stuck to it. I wrote about atheism, diabetes (which I do think is important and stay tuned for a video about canine diabetes and how to test blood sugar), dog food, feral cats, and of course, greyhound racing. Yesterday's lessons learned were primarily about blogging. Today they're about language. Lesson #7 Obsessing over language can become counterproductive.

National Justice for Animals Week

Critter News

The mascot for this year’s National Justice for Animals Week is Adam, a spunky black cat who was set on fire by two teenage girls in a vicious attack in Santa Rosa, California, as an eight-week-old feral kitten. ALDF’s Criminal Justice Program provides free legal assistance—including legal research and strategy suggestions, location of expert witnesses, and sample pleadings—to prosecutors handling cruelty cases and works to strengthen state anti-cruelty legislation.

Purple Swamphen: Supertramp or superspecies?

10,000 Birds

The colorful Purple Swamphen ( Porphyrio porphyrio ) lives in wetlands from Portugal and Senegal all the way east to New Zealand and the Samoan Islands, and a feral population is now well established in Florida. the eBird/Clements checklist puts them in a group as of version 6.9), but as far as I can tell, the new study didn’t sample viridis specifically.
