Their taxonomic affinities have caused great confusion and debate amongst ornithologists; they were originally assigned to the thrush family, then Old World warblers before being shifted to babblers (the last mentioned a common dumping-ground for any aberrant passerines). They have been considered sunbirds, Australasian honeyeaters and thrushes before being placed in their own family, Promeropidae. My home country of South Africa can only be described as a birding paradise!

This species is a southern African endemic, restricted to, but fortunately not uncommon, in dry woodland and sand forest habitats of northern Zululand, Swaziland, scattered pockets of north-eastern South Africa and southern Mozambique. Its mostly found on the ground in thickets or the edges of dense vegetation and usually in small family parties.

This was tough because this excluded species that occur in two countries within South Africa’s geographical area, Lesotho and Swaziland. I then had a list of 20 or so favorites and decided that, in order to get down to 10 birds, each bird needs to be in a different family. Cape Sugarbird One of only two members of its family, this stunning bird is common in suitable habitat around Cape Town.
