At last count, there are 25 species of birds named for U.S. states, with varying degrees of geographical relevance (sorry, Tennessee Warbler ). But only two states have more than one bird named for them: Hawaii and California, with nine and seven extant and eponymous species, respectively. Good birding and happy drinking!

Through multi-partnerships, cooperation, federal funding, and the private conservation efforts of one family, 616 acres were officially added to the Cherokee National Forest in September 2018. This particular land near the Tennessee-Georgia border is critical as a protection for Taylor Branch, a tributary of the Conasauga River.

The stars of the bird world take many forms and fame is often related to location but some species, some cool groups of birds are accorded priority no matter when or where they are seen. One such star avian family is the Setophagidae, the birds known as wood-warblers. In fact, the first one I ever saw was a wintering bird in Mexico.

It was a treat to see several wintering members of the esteemed Parulidae family. The golden bird was on a buggy island in a wetland, a spot that also harbored many other wintering warblers including several Tennessees and a busy Worm-eating. 171 Species. 171 Species. Wintering Wood-warblers. Agami Heron.

Green Herons , Eastern Kingbirds , Tree Swallows , Cedar Waxwings , and a host of other species were successful in breeding and there were a lot of birds around. I particularly enjoyed watching and digiscoping the Red-eyed Vireo family that was foraging low and in good light. I waited, patiently, and finally the bird showed itself.

That fallacious family name seems to have encouraged all manner of knaves, dunderheads, and miscreants when time came to label species. Most of the warblers south of the border escaped this ignominy; those Basileuterus and Myiothlypis species generally appear exactly as advertised. NAMED FOR PEOPLE. NAMED FOR PLACES.

Called home to the Oregon Coast to operate the family motel, in her free time she leads Tufted Puffin walks and escapes to guide at birding festivals and explore the world as often as possible. The first we went to was a family home with generations of mezcaleros and the process being completed in their front courtyard.
