Gaining independence in 1990, Namibia is one of Africa’s “newer” nations, although not quite as newborn as South Sudan which has yet to celebrate its first anniversary! However, Namibia’s colonial history began earlier, in 1884 when it was annexed by the Germans.

For number three we need to travel to Mahango Park in Namibia. This is a small and very interesting park in northern Namibia. In my family, we have a tradition (in place since 1347 when we survived the Black Death) of “ wait over the weekend and see what happens ”. Once I got home, I started feeling very sick.

And so, back to political entities, this field guide covers Namibia , Botswana , Zimbabwe , the southern half of Mozambique (south of the Zambezi River), South Africa , Lesotho and Eswatini ( Swaziland ). Yet, unless you live in the region, you are likely to have a vague idea where the Zambezi flows and no idea where Kunene is.

It all comes back to a split in one of the great bird families, the Turdidae, or thrushes. Once upon a time, when I started birding, this great family included a wide range of species collectively known as the robins and chats. The family reunited in safety. Collared Palm-thrush with no collar visible. They remain little know.

Families that are endemic to the continent include such strange birds as Shoebill , Secretarybird , Hamerkop , mousebirds and rockfowl ( picathartes ) and delightful groups including bushshrikes, sugarbirds, rockjumpers, woodhoopoes, turacos and hyliotas. What are the must do destinations and what must one see?

Its mostly found on the ground in thickets or the edges of dense vegetation and usually in small family parties. Another southern African endemic, this species ranges widely across the dry grasslands of central South Africa, Namibia and Botswana. Once their soft trilling call is learnt, they are easily detected.
