In recent years Indonesia has been competing with the Andes as the region giving rise to the biggest number of undescribed bird species (naturally, all of them endemics). But since Indonesia has more than 1,700 bird species (and that many islands, too), why is this guide dealing only with 1,400?

This is the home of the Rusty-naped Pitta , admittedly one of the less glamorous of the family, particularly the subspecies found in Yunnan, but still a nice sight and still a pitta. No doubt, the Lesser NLT will be relieved not to be bossed around by its erstwhile bigger family member anymore.

The Trogon family (and order, since the order only includes one family) is quite widespread, being found in all the tropical (and some subtropical) regions of the world. So far, one third of my weekly outings have involved trogon sightings, with their distinctive calls being heard on a few other trips. Those are good numbers.

There are few families of birds as bewitching as the birds-of-paradise. Adding to their mystique is the remoteness of their home, the undeveloped and rarely visited islands of New Guinea and eastern Indonesia. But there really is only one bird family (in a taxonomic sense) that continuously sets the benchmark for how green a green bird should really be: the Chloropseidae, the Leafbirds. It really ain’t that much of a unique selling point of the West Palaearctic region.
